CHALLENGES
The GSDM Tourism Body was
launched recently and made
history by being the first and
only regional structure of its
kind. Tourism has been
identified as one of the
economic pillars of the region
and possibilities for investors
are endless.
The Executive Mayor of Greater
Sekhukhune District
Municipality, Cllr Namane
Dickson Masemola mentioned
during the launch of the GSDM
Tourism Body that “Sekhukhune
was buried alive for the past 13
years”, as its name did not
appear on the tourism maps of
South Africa. This launch is
indeed a milestone and a step in
the right direction to improve
and develop tourism in the
region.
There is a need to establish and
develop a tourism route in the
District so that tourists could
access unique local features
that were found nowhere else in
the world but in Sekhukhune.
During this launch Masemola
urged members of the RTA to work
hard in developing the tourism
industry in the District and
that co-operation of all
stakeholders will be needed to
make this dream a reality.
One don’t need to look far to
follow a success story. One
close to home is the development
of Belfast area. The tourism in
this area is booming as
stakeholders co-operate and
support each other. Another
classic example where
co-operation proved to be the
key ingredient to success is the
Wine Route in the Cape Province.
Let us follow these examples and
make the best of Sekhukhuneland.
