Sekhukhune This Week

Youth month got off in style in Sekhukhune district.

Not so because of the convergence of exuberant youngsters in Marble Hall Civic Hall – the food and the blissful celebration after the formal event.

The main attraction of the gathering was the seriousness and pertinence of the issues that every speaker raised. Those were the issues of HIV, political and economic development, to mention a few.

It was an event that debunked the perception that the minds of today’s youth are preoccupied with the three Cs – cash, cars and cellphones. They listened attentively and reacted in their usual way of clapping hands.

Greater Sekhukhune District Municipality (GSDM) executive mayor Namane Masemola touched on the most important issue – wealth, particularly mineral wealth.

We will not delve deeper into that issue as we have a story covering the essence of his speech in this edition.

But, in short, he asked why are Sekhukhune youth folding their arms while beneath their land is an abundance of mineral deposits: 20 % per cent of the world’s platinum reserves!

The Youth Month programme for Sekhukhune is packed with a number of crucial activities such as memorial lectures, skills development days, youth leader development camps, ID and voter registration campaigns and an entrepreneurship development conference.

Accolades must go to the Youth Council for such an enriching line-up of youth events.

Who said the youth are apathetic on everyday issues that affect the country? Think again.
