Cyril Mashego the Orlando Pirates’ under-15 captain gave
his mother a reason to dress face with a glowing smile
that would wipe all the years of toil behind her
talented son.
It all began when, Gladys Mashego of our own, working in
the Corporate Services Department of the GSDM at the Old
Mutual Building saw something in the legs of her son
Cyril. At the age of two he would dribble his two elder
brothers, using his two legs. “He was always fluent with
his left and right foot convincingly” say Gladys who
smiled clan destinely. She speaks passionately about
buying him the first plastic ball that he played with
all day long and he would even sleep with the ball.
Sometimes he wouldn’t even eat.Older boys like to play
with him because of his mature dribbling and turning
prowess – quite ahead of his age. |
As the number one fan of his son’s raw talent she wanted
to see it being diamond-cut to meet the world class
standard and…
“Ever since I did not miss any trial, I still remember
when I took him to the Limpopo under-12 Trials at the
age of 10 , he was just a splendor in display, small but
beautiful on the game, I felt rewarded when my efforts
paid off in that trial. I was the only female parent
behind my son. We had nothing, I had to ask for a leave
at work and board a taxi. I think it was by divine or
design that I am the mother to Cyril” she added.
In 2005 Chiefs selected him and he eventually joined
Pirates in October last year, and he took Captainship in
January. Cyril Mashego is being promoted to under 19. He
successfully went through the Danone Cup where they went
to Port Elizabeth where they lost to KZN.
Cyril Mashego is already paving his way to 2010 World
Cup, he is leading Orlando Pirates team to Manchester in
England. In his own words Cyril said “This is the best
thing to have happened to me since I started playing
soccer seven years ago. I can’t wait to be in an
aeroplane’.
Her message to parents is simple, “Give your self time,
go on and identify your child’s talents. Don’t even look
at your sufferings.” Indeed MaMashego groomed a hero and
it was not easy but it was worth the goal.
