INTRODUCTION

The Greater Tubatse Municipality was established on 5 December 2000. It consists of the following 5 Transitional Local Councils:

Limpopo Province Mpumalanga Province
Steelpoort
Tubatse
Eastern Tubatse
Steelpoort
Ohrigstad
Burgersfort
Portion of TRC of Lydenburg

It is a cross-border municipality with Burgersfort as its seat. It is a category B municipality. Its name “Tubatse” has been derived from the Tubatse River (Steelpoort River).

 LOCATION

Its border trends from the Olifants River (North of the Strydom Tunnel to 35km South of Lydenburg, from Ohrigstad to Steelpoort Park).

The major rivers in the area are:

  • Tubatse (Steelpoort) River.
  • Spekboom River.
  • Olifants River.
  • Ohrigstad River.

In the bigger towns, purified water is pumped from the rivers but Ohrigstad and the rural areas are dependent for their water from boreholes.

The neighbouring municipalities are:

  • Makhuduthamaga.
  • Fetakgomo.
  • Thaba Cheven.
  • Greater Groblersdal.
  • Greater Hoedspruit / Makwatswi.

Greater Tubatse Municipality (Burgersfort) is situated on Road P33/2
± 160 km from Nelspruit.
± 160 km from Middelburg.
± 160 km from Polokwane.
± 60 km from Lydenburg.

ECONONOMY PER SECTOR

Mining

The following minerals are mined in the Greater Tubatse Municipality.

  • Platinum.
  • Chrome.
  • Vanadium.
  • Andalusite.
  • Silica.
  • Magnetite.

Mining is one of the major sources for employment. Prosperity has come to the area and the town Tubatse (Burgersfort) is one of the fastest growing towns in the country.

Except for mining, sources for employment are the business sector as well as agriculture.

Agriculture

The following products are cultivated in this area:

  • Citrus.
  • Vegetables.
  • Corn.
  • Maize

Except for the above-mentioned farming activities a lot of people are also farming with cattle, goats and game.
